Appearing on MSNBC, Rev. Jesse Jackson compared the kιlling of unarmed teen Michael Brown to a “state execυtion.”
“[H]ow many times was he shοt?” Jackson asked. “And where was he shοt? And why was he lying in the street for several hours? That was kind of a state execυtion.”
“There’s a pattern of this behavior,” said Rev. Jackson, referencing Trayvon Martin and Oscar Grant.
In op-ed published at USA Today, Jackson argued that communities like Ferguson are suffering.
“This is a hard working, church going and middle-to-working class community with families struggling economically to keep their heads above water. There is also a smaller but growing poor community in
Ferguson. It reflects what’s happening in America generally,” wrote Jackson. “When journalists and politicians speak of a dwindling middle class that’s under economic assault and a poor community that’s getting bigger, they’re talking about Ferguson. Independent of the racial demographics and dynamics of Ferguson, Missouri, there’s a ‘Ferguson’ near you.”
Rev. Jackson did, however, have praise for State Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson, whom Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon sent in to take over security operations.
“I really want to say Capt. Ron Johnson has made himself eligible to be the next police chief of Ferguson,” Jackson said. “He has handled himself in such a way that he has brought calm to a very chaotic situation.”
Johnson has been walking with protesters and hugging them.
“I’m not afraid to be in this crowd,” Johnson told reporters.
Johnson acknowledged the fear of police in the community and said he will do all he can to change that.
"When I see a young lady cry because of fear of this uniform, that’s a problem.” Johnson said. “We’ve got to solve that.”
